Craving Donuts

Hey there! Hope you’re having a wonderful & relaxing Sunday! We’ve had a great weekend despite the sun refusing to shine. I’ve spent most of my time running, teaching Jazzercise, eating, and napping – some of my favorite things!

Yesterday started bright and early with my second (and final!) 20-miler before the Little Rock marathon. The sidewalks were non-existent and the roads were still pretty icy and slick, so it was a bit of a stressful run. The winter has made me really dislike running on the roads with cranky drivers everywhere. I cannot wait for spring and clear sidewalks and trails!

This run went a lot better than last week’s 20 mile run, and that makes me hopeful that my endurance is improving and my body is ready for the 26.2. I had to take a potty break at mile 11 and this was my only real stop. I’m hoping this pit stop was brought on by the mid-teen temps and that I won’t have to be using any porta potties along the race course!

After this run, a bagel with jelly for a snack, and a hot shower, I had to meet the Jazzercise ladies for a meeting at London Calling. A lunch meeting here after one of my long runs was probably one of the best ideas ever!

We all placed our orders before we sat down for our business meeting on the double decker bus. I ordered the traditional pasty because it was dairy-free. But I was happy to find that it was delicious and decadent!!

It was buttery and stuffed full of beef, potatoes, and onions. Yum!!

I ate this pasty in about 2 minutes flat and dipped my leftover ‘crimp’ in some grape jelly. My post-run belly was SO happy! And I even took one home for Nick after our meeting because I’m the sweetest girlfriend ever. He loved it too. 😉

And now for Donuts!!

I don’t know what it is, but I have been craving donuts ever since last night. After dinner I wanted a donut so bad, but the roads were getting icy and we didn’t want to spend anymore time out before heading home. I had an apple to satisfy my sweet tooth, but it didn’t work too well. I went to bed still thinking about donuts and even woke up this morning still craving donuts!!

On a side note, donuts are awesome but really aren’t my favorite sweet treat. I would rather have a giant cupcake or a hot chocolate chip cookie. So when I was craving them still this morning, I knew it was one of those cravings I would have to satisfy ASAP!

Hurts Donuts was the only donut shop open this afternoon, so Nick and I headed downtown to try out Springfield’s newest donut shop.

I had this fluffy streusel donut because it was hot when we got there. 🙂 I’m a sucker for hot donuts! And Nick had the plain glazed donut. I also got a special Reese’s peanut butter cup donut to bring home for later.

Both of them were amazing and disappeared in 30 seconds flat!

Yum yum yum!! Mac was sad that mommy brought home a chocolate donut that he couldn’t have.

He was so cute that I’ll have to remember to being him a bite of a plain glazed donut next time!

Hurts was a really cute little shop with a great variety of donuts. They had one covered in Oreos and another covered in Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal. This place might convert me into a donut-loving fool! No they aren’t healthy, but a donut a month won’t hurt anything. 🙂 If you’re in downtown Springfield soon, you should stop by for dessert. They are open 24 hours!

Tonight we are just relaxing and finishing up some things around the house. I have some of my famous chili in the Crockpot that we’ll be digging into soon. I can’t wait! Have a good night and I will see you all tomorrow!!

Triceps on Fire

Hey there! How’s your Thursday going? Mine’s going well, but it’s honestly been pretty lame. I have declared today as ‘lame-sauce’ and I am ready for tomorrow. Even if Friday’s are boring at the office, it’s ok. We’ve got the weekend to look forward to. 🙂

One of the few highlights of today was trying out this little treat for the first time.

IMG_3246If you like lemon-flavored desserts, you will die for these Fiber One lemony bars. They are fantastic and only 90 calories! I’ve found my new go-to ‘non-guilty guilty pleasure’ snack. Note to self: stock up on these babies this weekend so we don’t get cranky next week when we run out!

So the last few evenings have been spent indoors because of the icky weather, and I took some of this time to learn a couple new Jazzercise routines. Tonight I will be debuting a couple of them, and this little guy definitely shows how I feel on one of the new arm routines I learned!

IMG_3251It’s a routine where you are in the ‘crab walk’ position doing tricep dips for about 5 minutes straight. Um, oww?! My triceps are STILL sore!! I didn’t realize how much this could hurt until I tried it for myself a couple times through. Any current instructors out there teaching R5-13’s Night and Day? If so, kudos to you. I’m not sure if I’ll make it through the whole thing tonight without a break!

And speaking of tonight, I’m hoping I have some friendly faces show up for class at 6:45. Not teaching for a couple days due to the snow always messes with me and makes me slightly cranky. I need to dance! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I love running but Jazzercise keeps me happy and sane.

Looking ahead to the weekend, it’s shaping up to be pretty uneventful and that’s ok by me! Jazzercise on Friday night, followed by running on Saturday morning and a Jazzercise meeting over lunch. We have some busy weekends coming up, so I’m thankful to have some time at home to myself.

Shoes and Toenails

Happy Hump Day everyone!

Sorry, the post title just sounds a little gross. But these two things have just been on my mind today: shoes and toenails.

First off, if you are a distance runner and have ever trained for a half or full marathon (or anything longer!), you’ll probably find this article hilarious and completely relatable:

I can completely relate to numbers 1, 2, 7, and 10. It’s amazing the issues you run into when you go running for longer than 90 minutes. I swear, every time I hit 10ish miles or 90 minutes into a long run, my body starts rebelling. Chaffing will start making it’s presence known; my tummy might start to get upset from having nothing in it but Gu’s; and my sore toe will start reminding me that it’s still there.

About a month after my first 10K is when I started seriously training for my first half-marathon. This is when my first toenail incident occurred, and I ended up losing the nail on my second toe on my right foot. I now know it was because my shoes were too small. Months of running + a missing toenail has made me realize that running shoes should always be bought a 1/2 size larger than your normal size.

I thought I had it all figured out. But then the week after my half marathon, I noticed that the SAME toe (that finally had a thin nail growing back!) was sore and turning purple underneath the nail again! What the crap?! I thought I had done everything right. I had size 7 shoes instead of 6.5. I had on nice wool, sweat-wicking socks. I had my nails trimmed short. But nope….still happened. Again. Great… Now I just have to wait for the sad, thin nail to fall off and grow out. With my luck, it will happen just in time for flip-flop season! 😦
toenailShould I get that for my car along with my 26.2 sticker that I will earn in March? Oh well…toenails are overrated. Guess I’ll just be picking my shoes a little more carefully during the next few months as the temperatures (hopefully!) start rising. I usually like my feet and enjoy wearing sandals/flip flops. But looks like I’ll be singing a different tune this summer!

New Running Shoes

Soooo, in hopes of preserving all my other toenails through my marathon and the summer months, I know I need another pair of shoes! Right now, I’m relying heavily on 1 pair and using another pair for shorter runs or trips to the gym. I love my first pair of good running shoes, Brooks Ravenna 4s, but I bought them in my normal shoe size instead of a bit larger, so I can’t use them for my long runs or race. This is why new shoes are necessary. 🙂

Right now I’m wearing these:

2318994-p-MULTIVIEWThe Saucony Cohesion 6 and I really like them. I want something similar but with just a little more support in the heel. My Brooks are nice and thick in the heel, and I love them for it! The hunt is on…and I’ve found that it’s a pretty good time to do shoe shopping in the running world. Companies release their new shoes at the beginning of the year, so the older (last season) shoes go on sale. Woot! I need to find something quick and get them broken in before Little Rock. I’m sorry, credit card, but it’s for the good of everyone. Nice, new shoes will keep my feet happy and will keep everyone else from having to see all my toenail-less toes this summer. 🙂

Other than pondering new shoes and toenail issues, my day has been fairly normal. It kept snowing overnight, so my morning run and commute to work were interesting. My run was slippery and cold. It was still coming down at 5 a.m., so it was like running in a dark snowglobe. I also had one guy driving a large truck stop and yell at me as I was running on the opposite side of the road from him: “Hey dumba**, you shouldn’t be wearing all black!” I proceeded to keep on running in the opposite direction as I flipped him the bird. I had on a neon long sleeve top, neon shoes, and a neon ear warmer with my black (and reflective!) puffer vest on top. And I was nowhere in your way. Sorry for wearing ‘all black’, but I can’t help it that you are obviously an idiot who just so happens to be colorblind as well. 😉  People like that need to spend just ONE day in the shoes of a runner. I doubt he could keep up with me for even 5 minutes! (and yes, I am still angry about the dumba** comment, can you tell?!)

Tonight Nick and I will be home together, so we may venture out to the gym for a bit. I only got in 6.2 miles this morning, so a couple more treadmill miles won’t hurt. Plus I love people watching at the gym in the evenings. There are some crazy characters that show up for some of the evening classes!
