Frostbite Half Marathon Training Plan

Happy Thursday! I’m ready for the weekend, and I can guarantee you all are too. 🙂 It’s been a busy week!

I’ve taught back-to-back Jazzercise classes each night (except last night), and the Jazzercise marathon will continue this evening right after work for another double-header. Woo! I’m just about jazzed out for the week. I teach one class after work tomorrow night, and then I’ve promised myself a completely lazy and relaxing evening after that. Nick should cook dinner for me, right?! Right….I’ll pass along the hint. HA.

Breakfast + Short Run

I’m going to technically start my 14 week training plan for my half marathon starting next week. But this week, with the days I had left, I was trying to squeeze in a couple runs to stay on track with my training that I was already kinda doing for my 10K last weekend. Having to teach 2 classes tonight kinda threw of my game plan, so I woke up with enough time to squeeze in a 3 mile easy run with Mac this morning.

We woke up around 5:30, and Mac was busting out the door before I could barely get his leash on. Over the past week, I’ve realized Mac can actually run fairly long distances as long as it’s not super hot. He’s been on two runs with me now (3.5-4 miles each), and we’ve only taken 1 walking break each time, aside from the multiple potty breaks which are a must for him!

We set out on a 3.5 miler that we took pretty easy with a 1 minute walking break. I didn’t want to kill myself, so he keeps me at a nice, steady pace. It felt good to wake up my sore legs from my longer run yesterday though, and I was nice and sweaty when we returned home. The temps were in the mid-40’s – nothing terrible. I’m hoping for some cooler temps this weekend so my body can get used to running long distances in cold temperatures.

Once Mac and I made it home, I took a super quick shower and got him ready to go again as he had an appointment with the groomer, a.k.a. doggie spa day! I always drop him off on my way to work for his 8 AM appointment, and then I pick him up during my lunch hour. I’ll have to post the fresh and clean Mac photos later – this doggie momma was rushing around and forgot to take pictures of my handsome boy!

Breakfast was once again quick, eaten at my desk, and I was still loving my Luna bars this morning!

photo(74)Peanut butter cookie Luna bar definitely gets an A+ in my book. And I also threw together a quick mix of Multi-grain Cheerios and peanuts to snack on mid-morning.

photo(75)Yum! No matter how short the run, if I run in the morning before work, I’m starving and needs lots of little snacks to make it through until lunch time. This mix did the trick!

Frostbite Half Marathon Training Plan

Since I had the night off last night, I decided to take some time to sit down and make up a training plan for my first half marathon!

Like I mentioned yesterday, I signed up for my first half marathon this week. I’ll be running in the St. Louis Track Club’s Frostbite Series on January 25. I’m beyond pumped, and I’m really excited to start training as well. It will be my biggest feat yet when it comes to fitness, and I can’t wait to stomp all over my main goal: finishing the race!

I’ve read a lot about running my first half marathon, and I think it’s best for me to not set any goals for my finishing time. I just want/need to focus on finishing the race and having fun with it. I figure Nick will come on some training runs with me to help push me along through these cold months of running I have ahead of me.

While I was making up my training plan last night, I knew I would have to incorporate my Jazzercise classes as my ‘cross-training’ days. I looked up some other plans, like Hal Higdon, etc., and I’ve loosely based my personal plan off of others I came across. This is what I came up with!

I’m doing a 14 week half marathon training plan, but this week currently marks 15 weeks til race day, so I went ahead and put my runs on there from this week and marked it as my ‘start’ week. Just because! I also marked my upcoming 24th birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s! The holidays could make my training a little difficult for a few weeks, so I hoped by marking them way in advance, I’ll be able to make plans to fit them in somewhere.

I want to be able to run 4 days a week, and possibly 5 on Monday evenings depending on how my body is feeling. For now, I am scheduling cross-training on Tuesdays and Fridays. On Tuesdays, I always teach 2 Jazzercise classes, and on Fridays, I have 1 class right after work. Then on Sunday mornings, I also teach 1 class, but I’ve often gone for a shorter run before teaching and have felt awesome during class. So I want to continue this during my training. Saturdays will be my ‘long run’ days because I don’t teach at all and should usually have time. But if not, I can always shift my long runs to Sunday if needed.

Is this more info than you bargained for? Probably. But I’m just trying to justify the reasoning behind my plan. 🙂 Plus looking at this plan makes me a little nervous, so just ‘talking it out’ helps me the most!

BTW, this is off subject, have you guys been indulging in any of the Halloween candy??

photo(78)A lot of this has been happening lately around my office. Sugar highs for everyone! Woo! I’ve successfully stayed away from most of the terrible-for-you candy except for the candy corn. I can’t help myself!

Well I hope you have a wonderful Thursday! Like I mentioned, I’ll be teaching 2 classes right after work, so you won’t see me until tomorrow. Have a great evening!

Jazzercise Fall District Meeting

This past Saturday started out bright and early for me, which I was not super excited for since we were out for a fun evening on Friday at the BCFO event. But I had to get ready to hit the road to Kansas City with my Jazzercise instructor team!

We loaded up in our fearless leaders Katie’s car at 8 am with our overnight bags in tow and made it to KC in time to grab a quick lunch before our meeting started at 12:30.

We have 2 meetings each year in Kansas City where all the instructors from the district come together and have a sort of business meeting on a Saturday afternoon. Kelly Sweeney is our district manager, and she leads the meeting where we learn about lots of things Jazz, Inc. related!

Kelly is the one on stage there in the white dress. She always puts together a great meeting full of important info.

photo(71)I was a rebel and didn’t put on my nametag. Oops. But I did listen and participate, so that has to count for something, right?!

photo(70)Check out this funky/terrible carpet that was in Marriott Convention Center we were at. I couldn’t stop staring at it during the meeting. Why is it that convention centers and hotels always have disgusting looking carpet in crazy designs? I have no clue….

The meeting wrapped up at 5 pm, and we went to check into our hotel for the evening. We stayed at a Sheraton close to the downtown Power & Light District. All 5 of us crammed into 1 room, and it actually worked out great!

Once we got settled and put on some fresh clothes, we headed out for the evening which started with dinner at Nara. It was a nice little sushi place that Katie liked to frequent when she lived in KC years ago.

I started my meal with some yummy seaweed salad.

photo(79)And then ordered 2 different rolls. One was called Mr. Lobster Roll and the other was an Apple/Mango/Crab roll.

photo(78)Both were amazing!! I couldn’t get enough of the lobster roll, and the apple/mango roll was almost like a dessert for me. Yum!

After dinner, we ventured into the KC Power & Light District. I had never been there before, so I had no idea what to expect!

photo(75) photo(76)Yes, this is Katie and Kim riding the bull at PBR. And the rest of our evening kinda went like that…HA! After some late night snacks, we made it back to our hotel room by 1:30 am. It was a late night but completely worth it. I always have so much fun with this group of ladies!

photo(80)Aren’t we cute?! We found this fun little telephone booth and had to do our group photo with it.

We headed back to Springfield early the next morning after we got some greasy McDonald’s breakfast in our bellies.

Someone was happy to see me!

photo(84)And for good reason. We also stopped by a Trader Joe’s in KC, and mommy brought home treats!

photo(74)It was my first trip into Trader Joe’s, and I left with organic dog treats, pumpkin butter, and pumpkin coffee!

photo(83)Mac was the most excited for the dog treats though.

photo(73) photo(72)The pumpkin butter is amazing!! Seriously SO GOOD. I had a spoonful of it this evening with some cottage cheese. Best idea I’ve had all day. YUMO! And I’m trying out the pumpkin-flavored coffee tomorrow morning. I’m sure it’ll be amazing as well. 🙂 Now come on Springfield and get a Trader Joe’s already!!

Nick was happy to have me home too. But I think mostly because he wanted to go get Mexican food without going alone.

photo(81) photo(82)Hah he’s so attractive. We celebrated my return home with some Mexican food for lunch at the new Jose Locos on Glenstone. It was delicious. And we’ve decided it will be our new go-to Mexican place. Hooray!

All in all, it was a GREAT weekend spent with my best friends. Now I’m just trying to get back to real life. It may take me the whole week to catch back up!

Have a great evening, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

Weekend Prep

This upcoming weekend is going to be a busy busy one, and this hit me yesterday about midday. Luckily, Wednesday night is my night off of teaching Jazzercise so I was home for the evening to take care of a few things that I know won’t get done Saturday or Sunday!

HOD2013OutsideFinalRight after work tomorrow night, Nick and I will be getting snazzy and heading to the BCFO’s Hooked on Dance event. It starts at 6 PM, so I tried to figure out our outfits last night. The theme is Havana Nights – so think Cuban Salsa club, circa 1950. At least that’s what I have in my head. And I don’t have much in my closet that fits this bill. But I have 3 options that I will pick as soon as I get home tomorrow. My bridesmaid dress from Katie’s wedding may be making another appearance this weekend! The weather will hopefully help me decide.

Hopefully this event doesn’t keep us out too late, because Saturday I’m heading off to Kansas City bright and early with our Jazzercise gang! It’s our semi-annual district meeting. All instructors and class owners have a very large meeting to discuss mostly business-related stuff. It’s always fun, especially because I get to travel with this group!

882611_10151533357345470_1187782214_oThis is our photo from the last district meeting earlier this year. This group of ladies is so much fun. We always have a blast when we go on these little trips together!

It’ll be a smaller group of us going up on Saturday morning (some of the instructors aren’t able to attend), so we’ll all be piling into one car. It’ll be a cozy ride! Then Saturday night after the meeting, we are going out to the Power & Light District in KC for a fun evening. We have a suite for all of us that evening, and we’ll head back to Springfield the next morning. It’ll be a quick trip but lots of fun!

Nick has graciously agreed to keep his weekend low-key so he can hang around the house and take care of Mac. I’m hoping to be home by around midday Sunday to get a few normal weekend errands done, but I know it’s going to turn into a whirlwind weekend where I’ll be racing to even get to bed on time Sunday night.

But let’s back up to lunchtime yesterday…I skipped over it last night because of my busy evening of catching up on cleaning and laundry. But it was a good one!

Eggie Lunch

I was craving eggs again when I got home yesterday! So I whipped 2 eggs in a bowl with 2 spoonfuls of cottage cheese and some salt and pepper. I microwaved this for 1 minute and then added a small can of mixed veggies to make a fairly colorful scramble!

photo(126)The cottage cheese keep the eggs from getting extra firm, but after 2 1/2 minutes in the microwave total, I was sure the eggs were cooked all the way through. This was super quick and I was stuffed after all the eggs and veggies were in my tummy!

photo(125)Eggs in the microwave = my lunchtime savior! Yum!

Breakfast

Breakfast today was a little sad. I started my morning at the gym after fighting with my alarm clock. This in turn made me late to everything the rest of the morning. Ugh! Soooo in my haste, I grabbed the first things from my fridge and pantry that I saw.

photo(123)The bag is already opened in the picture, but these Kay’s Protein Pretzel Sticks are actually really tasty when you want something crunchy! I grabbed them to go along with my breakfast because they have 12g of protein, are gluten free, and are cinnamon toast flavor! But they are very good for being gluten free. Really.

photo(124)I also had some Greek yogurt and a big ol’ apple that I chopped up quickly to avoid the awkward apple crunching in my office. No one wants to listen to someone else chomping into an apple at 8 AM.

This mix kept me full most of the morning. I had a small banana and some trail mix as lunch time approached. It’s been a pretty hungry day today. I blame my workouts and my run from yesterday. 🙂

Lunch was the typical salad and Lean Cuisine – yes, I know I said I wanted to get away from the packaged/processed foods. It’ll happen…one day. 🙂

The weekend prep has to move ahead this evening since tomorrow we’ll be dancing the night away! Tonight will consistent of Jazzercise at 6:45 and then a little packing for the weekend trip to KC. The temps are supposed to be chilly, especially when we are out downtown on Saturday night! So maybe some scarves, tights, and boots will be in order. Yay for Fall clothing! LOVE IT!

Have a great Thursday night, ya’ll. We’re almost to the weekend!
