Packing is Hard

So I started finally packing my race weekend bag last night… And I must say, it’s hard to pack for a race when the temperatures could be anywhere from 40-60 degrees and there’s a good chance for thunderstorms.

From left to right, I compiled a cold outfit, a medium temp outfit, and a ‘holy crap it’s hot’ outfit. If you look closely, you can see a sleepy puppy that was no help at all in this process.

Mr. Mac was a lazy boy last night! Anywho, I’m hoping I’ll be wearing my medium temps outfit: Lululemon running crops and tank top. This will be the comfiest for me. But I know I’m not in charge of the weather that day, so I’m prepared to adapt to whatever the Little Rock meteorologists say!

Due to the rain in the forecast , I’m also packing a hat with a brim to keep the rain out of my eyes, lots of Aquaphor! (for obvious chafing reasons!), and plenty of trash bags and ziploc bags to go around. This girl doesn’t mess around when it comes to being prepared, so I’m ready to rock this potentially rainy first marathon! ๐Ÿ™‚

I got in my last scheduled run this morning despite sleeping past my alarm a bit. Oops!

I did this run at a nice easy pace. It was definitely more for my peace of mind than anything else! The whole time I was trying to focus on my stride and how I wanted to run during the race. I was completely at peace by the time I arrived home, so I think that’s a good sign. I’m not sure what this 26.2 will bring, but I do know that I’ve done everything I can to be as successful as possible.

Tonight I’ll be focusing on finishing packing my bag and packing Mac’s bag for the weekend. Luckily, he’s not difficult. Food, a toy, and his bed is all he needs to be happy!

Nick and I will be finalizing our travel plans, and I’m hoping he’ll be the world’s best navigator for me. I will drive us on Saturday and he will drive us back on Sunday. But he will also do all the driving to the start line on Sunday morning. The stress!! I’m praying that this is much simpler than I’m anticipating. And if we get desperate, he can drop me off and go hunt for a spot farther away. Post-race pics with my giant medal will be the most important thing anyways! ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m off to get some of my packing done before Jazzercise at 6:45. I’m thankful that during this stressful week, I still can go and dance with my awesome Jazzer ladies! Have a great night, everyone!

Carb Loading is NOT My Fave

Happy Thursday! It is FRIGID here today. I’m talking ‘high of 15 degrees with a negative wind chill’ frigid. Yuck! When I woke up this morning, my weather app told me to go to the gym instead of run outside.

Yes, I’ve powered through worse during these past few months, but when it feels like -10 degrees and the wind is blowing that hard, it’s just not worth it…especially during my taper week! So I headed out to the gym to complete my easy 3 miles for the day. I did some intervals – 2 minutes at a 8:15 pace, 2 minutes recovery at a 10 min pace – and that helped the time fly by on the dreaded treadmill.

Once I got to work this morning, the carbo-loading began. To be perfectly honest, it’s not that exciting and I’m not feeling so hot from it. I thought I would love it, but it’s really not my fave. At all…This is what I’ve had so far today.

IMG_3136Breakfast! Which was followed by a snack of cinnamon graham crackers (not pictured).

IMG_3137Then this stuff! Donated by a kind coworker. It was tasty and helps the immune system + 14g of carbs, so I was thankful for their gift.

IMG_3140Lunch! Whole wheat bagel + some fettucine Lean cuisine. I also stole some of Nick’s guacamole and had it some tortilla chips. Don’t tell him though. ๐Ÿ™‚

After that lunch, my tummy has been slowly expanding the rest of this afternoon (probably from the alfredo sauce….oops). I know it’ll pass as the gluten and carbs digest, but it’s definitely not been the most pleasant experience so far! I’m just thankful for my run this morning. Exercise makes my tummy hungry. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to stomach this much food.

I’ve decided that I will continue with my ‘carb-o-thon’ through dinner tomorrow night, but my heaviest meal tomorrow will be lunch. Dinner will be eaten late with Nick’s family, and I don’t want to wake up Saturday morning still trying to digest my food from the night before. So I’ll try to keep my helpings of spaghetti and bread fairly small tomorrow evening!

Sickness Be-Gone!

Today, I’ve still felt a little icky with a sore throat and a runny nose, so during lunch I grabbed some meds to get me through the day.

IMG_3143And also two little Halos for a citrus + vitamin C kick. (Ignore Mac….he’s doing doggie yoga in the background!)

IMG_3141It all seems to be helping this afternoon! Hopefully the Zicam will work and at least keep me from feeling any worse through the weekend. I’m not sick yet, but I definitely feel like it could hit at any moment. Lots of hand sanitizer and orange juice for me until Sunday!

In other news, I came across our professional photos from the Diva Dash 5K today!

Can you spot Rikki and I? Look for the pink tutus on the right-hand side. Good luck.

Tonight will consist of last minute packing (though most of it got done last night!) and teaching Jazzercise at 6:45. This will be my last class before the race, so we will be taking it easy so we don’t kill my quads pre-race. I’ll try to have a little fun though….it’s my last class until Monday AM!

Have a great night, and I will see you all tomorrow before we head off to STL!

Preparation Anxiety

Happy hump day! Hope you’re having a great Wednesday. Mine is okay minus the fact that my race is getting closer and closer. I’m nervous!

Yesterday was completely exhausting for me. Work was nonstop all day, and then I taught 2 Jazzercise classes last night. It’s taper week, right? Yep, but this instructor doesn’t really like to rest.

I woke up early to get in my scheduled shorter run this morning. I ran 4.5 miles at a fairly easy pace (around 9 min/mile), and it was nice to get out in the cold morning air and do what I love. When I took off from my driveway, I was sure to keep an eye on my current pace (on my app!) because I want to know what I should feel like when I start out a little slower than normal pace on Saturday. My ideal race pace would be 8:30/mile overall for the half marathon, but I need to begin the race a little slower so I don’t bonk on the crazy big hills. I’m hoping for a 8:45-9 min/mile pace for the first 2ish miles, and then I’ll speed up when I feel warm and not headed uphill. But then again, this is my first half. I know I need to stop focusing on numbers and just run comfortably to cross the finish line. No matter what time I get, it will be a personal record! And one that I can beat later on. ๐Ÿ™‚

Preparation Anxiety

I’m starting to have some serious anxiety about packing correctly for the weekend. Isn’t that dumb? It’s the Type-A side of me that always takes over before something exciting happens…like my race!

The forecast for STL on Saturday morning is giving me some mixed emotions…

Based on this forecast from the local station, KMOV, my run will be below freezing, windy, and possible snow. Hmm. I know this is what I have trained for all winter, but I would really prefer for wind and snow to stay away. ๐Ÿ™‚ The low temp on Friday night is what’s stressing me out the most. With my run at 8:30 am, there won’t be much time for any warming on Saturday morning! I’ll be okay, but I may have to pack 2 bags. I have way too many scenarios to pack for now! The pressure!! I need to pack…

  • Warmer weather clothes, just in case it gets freakishly warm!
  • My ear warmer and 2 pairs of gloves.
  • 2 options for bottoms (my lululemon tights and then some looser track pants I can put over the top)
  • 2-3 long sleeve tops + my puffer vest
  • Rain jacket
  • Socks + Compression sleeves and socks (for after)!
  • Favorite sports bra
  • Running shoes, obviously!

And once again, I talk (or type) out things that are stressing me out to help me remember! So thanks for listening to my ramblings. It helps me cope. ๐Ÿ™‚ย  I’ll also be bringing along my hand-held bottle and my favorite Jelly Belly Sports Beans to help fuel me mid-race. I think I have a pretty good fueling-regimen in place to get me to the finish line without hitting a ‘wall’ of any sort, but we’ll wait to see how it holds up before I share.

This morning started out on a good note with some new yogurt I picked up over the weekend!

IMG_3128This apple pie-flavored Greek yogurt was as awesome as it sounds. I could’ve eaten multiple cups of it in one sitting it was so tasty! I also had a big ole cup of oatmeal on the side to fill my tummy post-run.

IMG_3129It kept me full for most of the morning. Plus, oats are great for carb-loading a few days out. A little early carbo loading never hurt anyone. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve been begged to sub a Jazzercise class tonight right after work to help cover some ill instructors. I know I need rest, but when the instructor begging you for help is sick AND pregnant, you tend to just give in. ha! So I’ll be teaching at 5:40 again tonight before heading home to pack up everything on my list. I definitely will NOT be doing any intense leg routines tonight – that’s for sure!

Have a great night everyone. Let’s hope we can all get some well-deserved rest!
