Winter Blahs

Happy Tuesday to ya! The sun is shining and it is finally above freezing here today! Yay for melting and warmth!

So I set my alarm this morning to get up and go to the gym. I heard it blare at 5 a.m., and I rolled over, turned it off, and went back to sleep. Yup. I just turned it off like it never happened. WHAT?! Me – the queen of waking up before the crack of dawn to get in a good sweat session – completely ignored my alarm and slept until the very last second. And it wasn’t only today. This ‘lazy’ trend started last week when I got sick the Monday before New Year’s. And now that I’m better, I can’t seem to get out of my funk! I’m calling it my ‘Winter blahs’.

WinterBlues_Car__Web1_I’ve come down with a bad case of the blahs, and I’m trying to push past it. Being sick last week + all the snow Springfield has had is turning me into a lazy, hibernator, and I’m not loving it! At first, I was afraid I was experiencing some running burnout. Which, to an extent, wouldn’t shock me. I’m in week 12 of my half-marathon training. But then I realized, I’m not sick of running. I don’t dread going out on my next run. I dread leaving my warm house and heading out into the cold and snow. That’s the main reason I didn’t get out of bed this morning: I was scared my car would get stuck on the side of the road at 5 a.m. with no one around to help.

To set myself back in the right direction, I’m going to teach my normal 2 Jazzercise classes tonight, and then complete a 7+ mile run tomorrow. And I’m going to love every minute of it! I’ve learned some new songs I’ll teach tonight. And as for the run tomorrow, I’ve already told myself that it is going to be challenging with all the snow on the roads. I will be fighting traffic and icy sidewalks, but whatever I don’t get done in the morning, I can finish in the gym tomorrow night with Nick. I just need to sweat and remind myself of why I love exercise, regardless of the crazy weather. 🙂

My first half-marathon is in 2 weeks and I can’t wait! And this also means that I don’t have time to be lazy. I need to push myself this week and then slightly taper my workouts next week to be in tip-top shape for the 25th. I can’t believe I’ve already been training for 3 months for this sucker!

photo(133)It has felt so good to mark off each training run as the weeks have passed. And I can’t wait for the half-marathon to be over so I can make new training plans for the Little Rock Marathon, and then the others halves that I’m signed up for this Spring. It’s going to be a fun and busy race season!

Tonight will be busy with Jazzercise, and I’m thankful for that. Otherwise I would probably go home and eat all the leftover brownies I made on Sunday. And I already had two with my lunch today….I’m just about brownied out!

Have a good evening!!

New Year’s Resolutions

Happy New Years!!!

I hope your 2014 is off to a great start. 🙂 I started my morning with a 8-mile run and some Jazzercise. I wanted to start my year off on the right foot! And I’ve ended my day with some black-eyed peas. Anyone else? I’m sure black-eyed pea sales rocket during the last week in December.

So it’s that lovely time of year where we get to make a bunch of goals and promises to ourselves about different resolutions that we may or may not completely keep during this new year. Do you have any exciting resolutions that you are working towards in 2014?

When I asked myself this, I got pretty nervous even thinking about my resolutions. I don’t know if you would really call them resolutions or simply goals for my year. My main resolutions are to eat healthier and to run more. I feel like I’ve fallen off the ‘healthy eating wagon’ during these holiday months, so I’m ready to get my body back in normal order with lots of fresh and clean eating. And running more is just a given because of the races I’m working towards.

My biggest goals for 2014 (currently!) are to run my first half marathon and full marathon races! That seems like a big feat right?! I’ve been consistently training, so I know I’ll be ok for my half that is coming up at the end of the month. The full marathon in March will be my biggest challenge though. It’s going to take a lot more than a couple months of training to push through those 26.2 miles. I’m trying to mentally prepare myself everyday for my races to come!

I’m sticking to my goals though by keeping up with my training and telling everyone I know about my race plans. My first half will be in St. Louis on Jan. 25, and my first full marathon will be in Little Rock, Arkansas on March 2. Those are my tops goals, and I’m excited/extremely nervous for them!

But maybe you’re not a runner, and you think I’m completely crazy. 🙂 Maybe you have a resolution to workout more in general. Well, I can tell you from experience that you need to make this goal very specific! For example: I commit to spend 1 hour in the gym 3 days a week. Or I commit to attend Jazzercise classes 4 days a week. Set some solid numbers in place and write it down! Plan your workouts in your calendar and it’ll be harder to skip a trip to the gym. Promise.

I came across this article on Sparkpeople’s website today:

Fitness clubIt caught my attention because the graphic was so funny! But I definitely have this issue. I get easily intimidated at the gym and it often keeps me from doing several exercises that I really want to do! And I would hate for this ‘gym-timidation’ to keep anyone from sticking with their resolutions this year.

This seems silly, I know. I’ve been working out in gyms since I was in high school, and now I’m a fitness professional (kinda!), and I still panic when there are too many muscle men in the free weight section of my gym. SO silly. So I loved this article where it says to just suck it up! Be brave and don’t worry what those other people think. And if you catch people staring, ignore them, and just tell yourself that they are jealous of how awesome you are. 🙂

Well I’m heading back to the couch for now. I’m still not completely over this flu-like crud that’s going around. No fever today. Just some coughing, a runny nose, and some aches. Fingers crossed that tomorrow I will be back to normal!

Enjoy your first evening of 2014. Nighty night!

Decisions, Decisions

Hey there! How’s your Thursday going?? It’s a cloudy/dreary day here in Springfield. I’m hoping we might get a little sunshine tomorrow before all the rainy gross stuff comes this weekend. Fingers crossed I can get out and do a long run on Saturday before the monsoon!

And speaking of running, I’ve been faced with a small dilemma. I guess I should call it more of an internal struggle. One of my girlfriends and old sorority sisters is moving to the east coast in January. She is already registered for the Little Rock Marathon that is March 2nd. She’s offered to transfer her bib/registration over to me.

imagesI’m struggling with the decision to just stay registered for the marathon (and switch my half marathon training schedule over for a full marathon) or to switch the registration over to the half marathon. But I’m not sure I’m going to be ready for a full marathon by March! In the back of my mind, I want to do it. I want to prove to myself that I can do it. I’m just really stinkin’ nervous to say I’m for sure going to run my first marathon before I’ve completed my first half!

ecard-marathonPlus, training lately has been difficult with the holidays. I want to eat and sleep and be fat jolly. So it’s been a struggle to get out there and run when the roads are snow-covered and it’s 15 degrees! I haven’t made up my mind yet. Maybe after I get in a nice long run this weekend, I can get a better grasp on how I feel about the 26.2.

Breakfast

I started my morning with 4.1 miles in 35 minutes – woot! So by the time I got to work I was hungry. I decided to try out the Pumpkin Spice Clif Bar today.

photo(125)It was good, but I must say, it wasn’t my fave. It was like a yummy and dense pumpkin pie, which I liked. But what I didn’t like were the large chunks of almonds I kept finding. I like some texture, but it was too much.  And I also had some Greek yogurt on the side for extra protein.

Tonight will be Jazzercise along with lots of mommy and Mac. I’ve been missing my little man lately!

photo(52)I need me some doggie snuggle time!

Have a great night everyone. See you on Friday!
