STL Pre-Birthday Weekend

Happy Monday! How was your weekend?? I hope yours was as much fun as mine! We arrived home yesterday evening around 6:30 which left me in a rush to get everything sorted out before the work week began! But it was worth it. We had so much fun visiting Nick’s family!

We arrived to Nick’s parents house around 8 pm on Friday night. Traffic was fairly light for a Friday evening, so I was pleasantly surprised! We had a nice dinner at home and headed to bed pretty early. We were all ready for some sleep after working all day and driving all evening!

Jazzercise + Tempo Run

Saturday morning started wayyyyy too early. Mac started getting restless around 5:30 am because he heard Nick’s two golden retrievers moving around in the living room. So we all decided to get up and have some early coffee. And after that, I headed off to take a Jazzercise class!

photo(93)This was my morning drive over to the Jazzercise center close to Arnold, MO. Four lane highway is a bit of a change of pace for me at 7 am! I made it with no problems though and stood in the back (I barely made it on time!).

photo(99)I love standing in the back of classes at this center. The women are all so energetic and friendly – plus they do the quirkiest things during class. I want to be able to take it all in!

The owner of the center came in while I was there, and I was happy to see her! Jan owns the center there in Arnold, but she is also a trainer for new Jazzercise instructors. So she is the wonderful lady that certified me and did my training back in June 2012! We’ve stayed in touch ever since, and I love dropping into her classes. While we were chatting, I asked that she recommend some local trails or somewhere safe where I could get a run in. She recommended a nice, paved trail that was less than a mile from the Jazzercise center. So after class and this quick convo, I headed back home to put on some running clothes and then back over to this trail.

The trail had a nice parking lot and several other vehicles were there – seemed fairly safe and legit! So I put on my ear warmer and took off in a hurry!

I was shooting for around 8 miles. My training schedule only called for 6 miles this week, but the trail was 2 miles long end-to-end, so I figured down and back twice would be perfect for a longer run. By the time I was headed back the first time, I was completely sick to my stomach and getting side cramps really bad. It wasn’t until I finished that I realized I was just running way too fast! I completed the 4 miles with a pace of 7:59 per mile. That was my first time breaking the 8:00 min/mile barrier, so I was pleased with that, just not pleased with my distance. So I called it my training ‘tempo run’ and headed back home to get ready for the day.

Luckily Nick’s mom is a sweetheart and knows me well, so she had lots of fuel in the fridge for my post-workout tummy.

photo(98)I had several of these during the weekend to help outweigh all the sweets I kept snacking on. I love some thick Greek yogurt after a workout!

The rest of the day was spent traveling into the city to visit with my girlfriend Emily and her boyfriend Nathan. They took Nick and I to a restaurant and bar called Biggie’s that was located on The Hill (known for its awesome Italian food!). So I obviously had to go with some nice homemade meat ravioli. Our meals here didn’t get a photo….my phone was MIA in the car. But it was all delicious, homemade, and really hit the spot after my morning workouts.

Dinner + Chocolate Cake

We headed back to Arnold, MO around 4 pm, squeezed in a cat nap, and woke up with a house full of family ready for dinner! Nick’s parents, his brother and his girlfriend, Nick, and I headed out for a fun dinner at 54th Street. We eat here a lot for family meals because the food is great and the menu has a bit of everything on it!

photo(106)I had a chopped grilled chicken salad, and it was amazing! It was full of fresh romaine, eggs, pico de gallo, avocado, tortilla strips, and lots of chicken! It was tossed in a honey lime dressing. It was so tasty, I could probably drink the stuff. Needless to say, I almost ate the entire plate! I decided not to overstuff though… I knew there was chocolate cake waiting at home for me!

Nick’s mom got a chocolate chocolate chip cake for my birthday! One of my faves!

photo(97)It’s hard to see, but this was some seriously dark chocolate cake. I also was modeling the cake while wearing some awesome red PJ pants with my hair in a bun.

photo(96)I’m classy, I know.

photo(95)Everyone had a piece once we got home. I may have snuck an extra sliver onto my plate once I polished off this piece. But hey, it was for my birthday, so the calories don’t count!

And with the cake in our bellies, that brought our Saturday evening to an end. I was ready to pass out by 9 PM after all the food!

I’ll spare you the rest of my weekend for another post. It’s amazing how much we cram into 2 days when we visit his family. I hope you’re having an awesome Monday, and I’ll see ya later!

Mac Turns 2!

Hey everyone! I feel like I’ve been scarce around here for some reason. It’s been a hectic beginning to my week, so I’m very thankful to have tonight off of teaching. I love me some Jazzercise, but I also love me some time at home with my doggie, Mac!

And speaking of Mac, he turns 2 years old this month!

IMG_2260Ahhh look at that tail wag. Just ignore the hair in his eyes. He is going to the groomers in the morning for a spa day. 🙂

In honor of his big day, Nick and I did a little gift shopping after my run on Saturday.

IMG_2262We picked up the cutest hoodie/sweater and a chew bone that stands up on its own! Mac had troubles paying attention to mommy with that bone around.

IMG_2264That’s better.

I’m so thankful for my little guy each and every day. He is always so happy to see me when I get home, and then snuggles into bed with me each night. He’s spoiled, but it’s for good reason. I love him! Plus, he’s cute so that makes him extra easy to love.

IMG_2266The sweater fits perfectly, and he’s been wearing it just about everyday as the temps have dropped to the mid-50’s here in Springfield. He’s not a ‘fufu’ dog, but he definitely enjoys being warm and cozy in some nice sweaters.

And in other news, I signed up for my FIRST HALF MARATHON!! I’m beyond excited! I’m going to be running the half marathon in the St. Louis Track Club‘s Frostbite Series in January. I feel like I have a good base for my training after preparing for the 10K, so I’ll just continue my running to increase my distance between now and January 25!

Any words of wisdom for this first time half marathoner?! Any advice is appreciated. I’m going into this pretty blindly I feel like even though I’ve done tons of research. Comment and let me know any awesome tips you may have to offer!

Morning Run & Breakfast

So in honor of finally registering for the half marathon (I’ve been thinking about it for a while now), I woke up bright and early today to complete 7 miles around my neighborhood. I completed it in around 59 minutes and felt great the whole time. The temps were in the low 40’s, and I was still comfortable. I’m sure my attitude will change as the temps keep on dropping during these months of training I have ahead of me.

I ate breakfast as soon as I got to the office, so it was my typical grab-n-go style morning meal.

photo(79)Luna bar. Banana. And yogurt. The Luna bar was extra chocolatey – I loved it!

Lunch

The morning went by quickly and I was headed home for lunch in no time! I started with a big salad full of romaine, spinach, snap peas, broccoli, carrots, and cauliflower.

photo(77)I topped this baby with my new favorite dressing, Lite Balsamic Vinaigrette, and a few dried cranberries. It was super tasty! And I finished off the rest of my meal with another bowl of the spicy chili I made on Sunday.

photo(75)Yum!!

And now I’m just relaxing at home, trying to catch up on some household chores that have been pushed aside so far this week. I also need to set up a good training plan for this half marathon so I’ll have some good guidelines to keep up with during these next few months. Should be a productive evening!

Have a good one, and I’ll see you all tomorrow!

Email Excitement

Happy Friday!

This week has gone by in a flash! And this morning came far too quickly as I wanted to get in a little workout before my day began extra early. This meant being at the gym right at 5 and being home by 6 to make it into work an hour early. But I was a champ and made it into work by 7 so I can get to Katie & Jesse’s wedding rehearsal by 5:15 tonight lookin’ all glam and stuff.

Workout

Since my workout needed to be quick, I wanted to keep it super focused and movin’ along. So I started with 15 minutes on the treadmill. I only made it to 1.25 miles…I was dragging my feet for sure, but it got my body warm and I was sweating! I then completed a quick circuit of chest presses, lat pull downs, seated dips, rows, and bicep curls. I need my arms to look good in my bridesmaid dress this weekend! I finished off the workout with 20 minutes on the Elliptical before rushing home.

Breakfast

Breakfast was another batch of Butterscotch Overnight Oats like yesterday, but I actually took time to prepare them last night.

photo(110)They got SUPER thick when I let the mix sit for 8 hours overnight, so I added 1/4 cup more almond milk this morning to soften it all up. I figured this would happen with the pudding mix being involved – so be warned. You’ll need some extra milk fo sho!

I also had a Greek yogurt on the side for extra protein to last me through the morning.

Emails, Emails, Emails!

This morning has been an awesome morning for EMAILS! You know all the annoying emails you get sent to your personal address daily? They usually come from stores you’ve shopped at, websites you’ve visited, etc. I typically spend about 5 minutes each morning clearing all the crap out of my inbox. But this morning my inbox was full of exciting things that I actually wanted to read!

First off, I got this email about the Diva Dash 5K coming to Springfield!

Screen Shot 2013-09-27 at 11.09.41 AMI went a little overboard and immediately forwarded this to all my girlfriends and my entire Jazzercise instructor database. Yes, I’m signing up. Yes, I’m dragging all my gal pals along. And yes, we will be wearing tutus on December 7th!

My second exciting email came in the form of something that is forbidden to me…

Screen Shot 2013-09-27 at 11.09.03 AMAndy’s Frozen Custard.

Pumpkin Pie Concretes are back as of TODAY!! Holy smokes, I am thrilled about this one! Since I’m super lactose intolerant when it comes to ice cream goodies, I never let myself indulge in the sweet stuff. Lactaid pills can’t touch a big bowl of ice cream in my stomach, so I just have to go without. But this is one ice cream item that I absolutely cannot go without each year. As soon as the wedding is over (and my fitted bridesmaid dress is put away in the closet!), Nick and I will be making an Andy’s run asap. Yes, I’ll get a stomach ache and hate myself for a day or 2. But the Pumpkin Pie Concrete is completely worth it.

My third exciting email actually nailed down what I will be doing for my birthday this year: going to see White Christmas the musical!

whitechristmas_02I’m so stinking excited for this! The broadway show is coming Juanita K. Hammons Hall on MSU’s campus November 1-2. My birthday is November 1, and I love this musical! So plans will be easy peasy this year! Tickets go on sale Oct. 4, so I’m hoping to get Nick and my mom and dad to tag along for the evening. Can’t wait!

I thought the email excitement was over until I just receive one more about 1/2 price massages at my normal massage place here in Springfield, which I absolutely love but have been avoiding due to money. PEACE thru Massage is hosting the deal through 417 Magazine – $22 for an hour long massage! So if you’re in Springfield and are looking for a great massage, check it out! I will be purchasing mine asap. 🙂

Whew, I’m worn out and it’s barely noon. I’ll be leaving work early today to get home and fancied up before the wedding rehearsal! My girlfriend Katie has been glowing every time I’ve seen her lately, so I can’t wait to see her and her groom tonight. We are doing a ceremony run through at the park before heading to a different venue for the meal, which is where Nick will be meeting me. Should be a fun night!

Enjoy your Friday and send good thoughts our way…the forecast is looking gloomy for the weekend, and this outdoor wedding needs some good weather!

See you all later!
