New Year’s Resolutions

Happy New Years!!!

I hope your 2014 is off to a great start. 🙂 I started my morning with a 8-mile run and some Jazzercise. I wanted to start my year off on the right foot! And I’ve ended my day with some black-eyed peas. Anyone else? I’m sure black-eyed pea sales rocket during the last week in December.

So it’s that lovely time of year where we get to make a bunch of goals and promises to ourselves about different resolutions that we may or may not completely keep during this new year. Do you have any exciting resolutions that you are working towards in 2014?

When I asked myself this, I got pretty nervous even thinking about my resolutions. I don’t know if you would really call them resolutions or simply goals for my year. My main resolutions are to eat healthier and to run more. I feel like I’ve fallen off the ‘healthy eating wagon’ during these holiday months, so I’m ready to get my body back in normal order with lots of fresh and clean eating. And running more is just a given because of the races I’m working towards.

My biggest goals for 2014 (currently!) are to run my first half marathon and full marathon races! That seems like a big feat right?! I’ve been consistently training, so I know I’ll be ok for my half that is coming up at the end of the month. The full marathon in March will be my biggest challenge though. It’s going to take a lot more than a couple months of training to push through those 26.2 miles. I’m trying to mentally prepare myself everyday for my races to come!

I’m sticking to my goals though by keeping up with my training and telling everyone I know about my race plans. My first half will be in St. Louis on Jan. 25, and my first full marathon will be in Little Rock, Arkansas on March 2. Those are my tops goals, and I’m excited/extremely nervous for them!

But maybe you’re not a runner, and you think I’m completely crazy. 🙂 Maybe you have a resolution to workout more in general. Well, I can tell you from experience that you need to make this goal very specific! For example: I commit to spend 1 hour in the gym 3 days a week. Or I commit to attend Jazzercise classes 4 days a week. Set some solid numbers in place and write it down! Plan your workouts in your calendar and it’ll be harder to skip a trip to the gym. Promise.

I came across this article on Sparkpeople’s website today:

Fitness clubIt caught my attention because the graphic was so funny! But I definitely have this issue. I get easily intimidated at the gym and it often keeps me from doing several exercises that I really want to do! And I would hate for this ‘gym-timidation’ to keep anyone from sticking with their resolutions this year.

This seems silly, I know. I’ve been working out in gyms since I was in high school, and now I’m a fitness professional (kinda!), and I still panic when there are too many muscle men in the free weight section of my gym. SO silly. So I loved this article where it says to just suck it up! Be brave and don’t worry what those other people think. And if you catch people staring, ignore them, and just tell yourself that they are jealous of how awesome you are. 🙂

Well I’m heading back to the couch for now. I’m still not completely over this flu-like crud that’s going around. No fever today. Just some coughing, a runny nose, and some aches. Fingers crossed that tomorrow I will be back to normal!

Enjoy your first evening of 2014. Nighty night!

New Year’s Eve and a Fever

Happy Tuesday morning to ya! Oh and Happy New Year’s Eve too! My week hasn’t been off to the best start, but I’m trying to just stay positive – no one wants to be a pouty party pooper on New Year’s!

I woke up yesterday morning feeling pretty icky. I had to get up for Jazzercise at 5 a.m. and could immediately tell that it was going to be a rough day.

high-fever-thermometer-clip-artThank you google images for all the lovely ‘fever’ clipart. HA! I had a lowgrade fever of 99.6 before heading out to teach class. I didn’t feel terrible, but I didn’t feel awesome either. SO I went ahead and taught class to the 2 ladies who showed up. I made it through our workout fine but with a little lower intensity than normal.

By the time I made it home, showered, and to my office for the day, I knew it was going to be rough. My fever had gone up to 100.2, and I was feeling it. I know that we are supposed to wait to take meds for a fever until it gets over 101 degrees to give the fever a chance to fight off the bad stuff in our systems. But I couldn’t stand to sit at my desk all day going from blazing hot to chilled and freezing. So I took some ibuprofen to get me though the day.

When I arrived home last night, I was definitely sicky-poo and needing some rest. Nick took care of me and got me some Chinese food (egg-drop soup!) that I tried to choke down. I laid on the couch and watched my temp rise up over 100 degrees again, so I took more meds and headed to bed around 8:30 pm.

This morning I slept in as late I could before rolling out of bed for the day. My temperature is only slightly elevated today, but the rest of my body still hates me. Why can’t I stay healthy for longer than a couple weeks?! I’m hating this fever/flu-like junk because I can do nothing except drink lots of fluids and rest. And this girl has a hard time resting. It’s amazing how my anxiety rises when I can’t get out and run or teach Jazzercise.

Ok enough with the crummy stuff. Onto the more fun items, like what are we all doing for New Year’s Eve?!

NewYearsEveI hope you have something fun planned! Nick and I were going to play it low key and have a quiet dinner out somewhere and then come home to watch the fireworks on TV with Mac. But now, since I’m feeling under the weather, it’s looking like he might be getting us some more Chinese take out for dinner.

It seems like each year we always want to do something really fun and exciting on New Year’s Eve, but then we wind up just kinda being boring. But I would rather be boring and cozy at home with my little family, than be in a crowded/noisy restaurant or bar with 100 strangers. Plus, this way, I can be in my pajamas by 7 pm! 🙂

Whatever you are doing tonight, I hope you stay safe and get to spend it with your loved ones. If you are sick like me, be thankful for holiday which gives us a day to rest and relax!

Have a great New Year’s Eve!

Frostbite Series 10 Miler

Happy Saturday! How’s your weekend going? Mines great but going to fast! I’m not ready to head back to reality tomorrow.

Frostbite Series 10 Mile Race

We woke up bright and early this morning to head to Forest Park in downtown St. Louis for the Frostbite Series 10 miler race!

The Frostbite Series is put on by the STL Track Club. They host a race every other weekend during the winter months. There is a short course and long course. Today’s races were a 2 miler and 10 miler, and I was registered for the long course.

We arrived to the Forest park Visitors Center with 45 minutes until race time. Nick and I got my bib and camped out by this cute Christmas tree until race time.

We lined up outside with about 5 minutes to spare. I wanted to be close to the front of the pack since it was an air horn start. My chip would track when I crossed the finish but not the start line.

And I was off! It was a fairly busy race, but I ran by myself for the most part.

The course was painful to say the least. I felt like I was running uphill the whole way, and I was losing steam fast. I literally wanted to stop at the 3 mile mark which is not like me at all!

I pushed through (barely!) and ran the whole route with a 8:26/mile pace. I even got the hang of the water cup hand off thing and got 2 drinks! I thought I was destined to smash that cup of water in the volunteer’s hand but luckily that didn’t happen.

I was all smiles as I crossed the finish line in 1:25:50. But it faded fast. I was pushing through one of the worst side cramps ever during the last 30 seconds.

20131228-201837.jpg
Cute, I know. That is the look of sheer pain and relief at the same time. I was happy to have Nick greet me at the finish. He’s my number 1 fan!

I snacked on some water and pretzels as my cramp subsided post race. And we headed home. I was a little sick from the hills and needing some real food ASAP!

Yay! We did stop at the nearest Panera Bread Co. though. More coffee was a must!

It was a great experience, and I feel very prepared for my half marathon in January now. It’s on the same route, just obviously 3.1 miles longer. 🙂

Tomorrow we’ll be heading back to Springfield. Back to real life and regular race training. I’ll be looking for lots of hills to train on between now and January!

Have a great night!
